We have been talking about the various plays on the basketball court and the rules of the game but before we go any further, lets backup a little and look at the background of the game.
Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in the year 1891. It is also worth pointing out that the inventor of basketball was a canadian citizen.
The game was first played on december 21st 1891 in the United States of America.
This is a game of limited contact whereby a player tries to scores by putting the ball through the hoop either by a lay-up or a shot. It can also be played both as an indoor and as an ordoor sport activity and also by any gender, by a male or female.
Basketball is played at various levels such as high school, collegue, professional and international level.
High school level is normally played when one is at the high school stage and the player plays for his/her school in competitions against other schools and the same goes for the collegue level.
The professional level is when a player plays for a certain team in the league and the NBA happens to be the highest professional basketball league although other leagues do exist. In this league is where we talk about players such as Lebron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry and so much more.
The Basketball Association of America(BBA) was formed in 1946 and three seasons later in 1949, BBA merged with the National Basketball League(NBL) to officially form the National Basketball Association(NBA).
The international level is then where these professional players play for their respective countries. For instance during the olympics, a player such as Lebron James plays for America because he is a citizen of the United States of America.
When the game was invented, only men were playing it until the next year that the rules were now adjusted to be suitable for women.
A female physical educational teacher, Senda berenson adjusted the game inorder for women to be able to play the game. The highest professional body for the women basketball is called the Women National Basketball Association(WNBA) and it was establised in the year 1997. In this league, we hear prominent names such as Lisa Leslie, Candice Parker, Maya Moore and so much more.
These are basic knowlegde you should have as you start the game so that you can atleast talk about the game with your friends and not look completely lost.
